We’re upgrading to Forge – here’s what you need to know

Atlassian is changing how Marketplace apps are built – and we're changing with it. Here's what that means for you.

A new foundation for our apps

Forge is Atlassian’s cloud-native development platform, and it’s where all new Atlassian capabilities are being built. Things like deeper security controls, performance improvements, and AI integrations through Rovo are all tied to it.

Atlassian is changing the way third-party applications work with their platform – with applications hosting their entire frontend and backend on Atlassian’s framework, hosting just their frontend and managing their own backend, or a “containerized” system.

We’re going to explain what this all means for you, for Tempo’s apps, and for the future.

Spoiler alert – this isn’t a change like moving from DC to Cloud. From your side, nothing changes about how you use our apps inside Jira or Confluence. The experience is the same. What shifts is what’s happening under the hood – and what becomes possible from here.

The three models

What is Forge Remote?

Forge Remote is a hybrid approach as the app’s frontend moves to Forge (Atlassian-hosted), while backend services remain on the vendor’s own infrastructure.

Forge frontend (Atlassian-hosted): An app’s user interface layer is deployed and served through Atlassian’s Forge infrastructure. Atlassian manages rendering, security sandboxing, and product integration.

Remote backend (vendor’s infrastructure): The core business logic, data processing, and integrations continue to run on the external vendor’s backend services. They maintain full control over their infrastructure, data, and intellectual property.

What is Forge Native?

Forge Native is the fully Atlassian-hosted model. Both the app’s frontend and backend run entirely within Atlassian’s Forge infrastructure, using Forge’s built-in serverless functions and storage APIs. There are no external servers involved at all.

What is Forge Containers?

Forge Containers is a newer capability, in early access as of this article’s publish date, that allows vendors to run containerized backend services directly on Atlassian-hosted infrastructure. Unlike Forge Remote – where the container runs on a vendor’s own servers – Forge Containers deploys those containers inside Atlassian’s AWS environment, behind Atlassian-managed security.

Tempo chooses Forge Remote

We are choosing Forge Remote because it allows us to transition to the new platform without changing how your data is handled or how we manage our own data and services behind the scenes.

This approach ensures continuity, stability, and the same high standards you already rely on. Tempo maintains a strong security posture backed by industry-recognized certifications, and we remain committed to protecting your data every step of the way.

From your side, you’ll interact with our apps inside Jira or Confluence as you always have, with minimal changes.

From our side, Tempo provides the same enterprise-grade security and compliance you expect. We protect and control your data and business logic while delivering the performance and compliance benefits of Forge on the frontend.

That said, we’re not treating this migration as the end of the journey. Atlassian continues to invest in Forge, and we’re paying close attention to where the platform is heading. We’re already participating in early access programs for newer deployment options where they make sense for specific products.

What’s next

We want to give you access to everything Atlassian’s platform offers while maintaining the security and reliability standards you already rely on. The Forge migration is how we get there.

The migration to Forge is scheduled to begin on March 31, 2026. This process will be rolled out gradually, so we are unable to confirm the exact date your specific instance will be updated. However, all instances are expected to be fully migrated to Forge over the next few weeks. After your instance is upgraded, you will receive an in-app notification confirming the change

We’ll keep you updated as things progress. If you have questions about how this affects your specific setup, reach out to our support team.
