De-mystifying the Cloud: 7 Cloud myths debunked

Cloud-based applications have been around for years, and whilst that should come as no surprise, the fact is there remain many misconceptions about what it means to be in the Cloud, and what some of the perceived limitations of Cloud deployment might be.

As a Cloud-first company, Tempo has heard many of these concerns from customers and prospects, so this handy guide should go some way to explaining away the more common misconceptions.

7 myths about moving to the Cloud

  • Myth #1: But what about Cloud security? I’d be crazy to put my data in the Cloud!

The reality is Cloud companies, Tempo included, adhere to extraordinarily stringent security protocols, including access controls, encryption, automatic redundancy failovers, guaranteed uptime SLAs, and much more. On-premise solutions rarely employ the same measures, and physical single-point hardware is susceptible to simply being unplugged.

As a Cloud-certified solution provider within the Atlassian ecosystem, our Cloud products also abide by (and, in fact, exceed) Atlassian’s compliance and data privacy standards, so customers can be confident everything is and will remain in order.

  • Myth #2: What’s the point? Cloud and Server apps are basically the same, right?

Not so fast. Tempo’s customers enjoy many of the same benefits, be they on Server or Cloud, but the deployment architecture allows for some significant differences in feature and functionality. The user experience is also different, so be sure to consider which deployment is most appropriate for your specific user’s requirements.

  • Myth #3: OK, but Server applications are so much cheaper than Cloud.

Two words here: Hidden. Costs.

If you’re simply comparing the cost of maintenance and support on Server vs. a Cloud subscription, you’re really comparing apples to aeroplanes. When you consider total cost of ownership over the lifetime of the product, you also have to factor in hardware maintenance and upgrades, user and security administration, implementation overheads, and a variety of additional costs.

In fact, Atlassian has created a neat cloud value calculator to help customers quantify the main hidden costs, and understand the real world implications of moving to Cloud.

  • Myth #4: But Cloud’s only for the little guys with basic functionality, right?

Nope. According to Atlassian, 80 percent of Fortune 500 companies have an Atlassian cloud license, and more than 90 percent of new customers choose cloud first.

Still not convinced? As of February 2020, properly 90% of the Fortune 500 use Microsoft cloud services. What’s more, the beauty of Tempo’s Cloud apps for the ‘little guys’ means they can get up and running in next to no time, and more often than not in a self-service capacity.

  • Myth #5: Apps aren’t available in the Cloud

Atlassian themselves dispel this claim, citing the more than 1,000 apps and integrations available today in the Cloud, with Developers building and releasing more all the time.

For example, did you know that The Atlassian Marketplace added in excess of 250 cloud apps and integrations in the last 12 months alone? The vast majority of Marketplace apps offer Cloud deployment as an option, and, in many cases, it is the only choice.

  • Myth #6: But I’m going to lose all my data!

Relax! Tempo is working in lock-step with Atlassian and our network of Business Partners on a variety of migration tools which will take the leg-work out of data migration to the Cloud instances of our products. You can check out details on our Migration Roadmap to get a sense of where we are headed and when we’re likely to get there. Also, be aware some customers are choosing to maintain a Server instance for historical data, and start with a fresh Cloud instance, so you’re covered either way.

  • Myth #7: I’m so busy! I don’t have time to move to the Cloud.

We hear this one a lot. The good news is Tempo is part of a thriving Atlassian ecosystem that can provide you with all the information you need to make the right decision, and a network of Business Partners who can do the lion’s share of the work for you. And maybe consider one of the reasons you’re so busy is because you’re spending time maintaining and servicing your on-premise environment? Just a thought.

Whichever path our customers choose to take as they migrate away from Server products, Tempo will work closely with you along the way to ensure you make the right decision, have all the facts, and can be confident for the future.
