At Tempo, we strive to build world-class project management solutions, whether time tracking software or an agile budgeting tool. To ensure the data from Tempo is accurate and actionable, especially when it comes to project costs, our customers often put sensitive information in the Tempo + JIRA system. In return, we make a commitment to transparently and reliably compartmentalize this sensitive information so only the right people can see it.
We’ve always had a commitment to supporting best practices when it comes to information security. The new features in Tempo Budgets 11.1.1 take that commitment even further.
We made significant improvements to permissions making them more transparent and customizable. We want to make it easier for our customers to share relevant folios with co-workers and help them to understand better who is able to view what data within Tempo Budgets.
Before we get to specifics, here’s a bit more about why we made these improvements.
Business software has changed dramatically
Beyond the buzzwords “cloud” or “SaaS”, our expectations for business software are fundamentally different than in past years. This has a lot to do with an increasingly global workforce, more emphasis on collaboration, and an on-the-go lifestyle that sees some of our customers tracking time “in the field” instead of the office.
The new way to work gives tremendous benefits, but is not without a few downsides:
- Distributed teams mean distributed work and information.
- “On-the-go” means some of your work is asynchronous, which makes collaboration a challenge.
- “In the field” and “from home” mean your business software is open to the internet.
There are many great strategies to manage these constraints. Indeed, Tempo has a number of ways to adapt to this modern workplace while still getting real time reporting at your fingertips, whether you’re behind a desk or logging your vacation from the beach (using the Tempo mobile app).
Having real time reporting at your fingertips is a competitive advantage in today’s fast-moving business landscape. That’s where Tempo comes in: Tempo facilitates real-time reporting, because it sits atop the same software where companies and their employees manage projects and track time, JIRA.
As with any reporting software, the insight Tempo provides is valuable only to the extent the inputs to the system are accurate, precise, and timely. When it comes to tracking project costs in Tempo Budgets, that means you must add real figures to your folios and portfolios. These can be resource costs, project contract value, departmental budgets, etc.
Data security and transparency
We understand that our customers want real time visibility into accurate and precise data. At the same time, they’re concerned about who can see this information and how easy it is to know and control that visibility.
Tempo provides granular control of information visibility so our customers can feel confident adding sensitive information to the software, which is necessary to get timely, actionable information.
Improved Permissions in Tempo Budgets
Tempo Budgets 11.1.1 includes significant improvements to permissions. In general, we made the process more transparent and customizable. More specifically, we:
- Changed the way you grant administrative permissions from JIRA groups to JIRA users. This way you know exactly who can access what without having to dig through the JIRA group membership.
- Added an option to hide portfolios if the information they contain is not visible to a given user.
- Updated the permission to view global cost rates (which typically relate to salary amounts) to grant to specific users, not JIRA groups. Again, this change helps you know more explicitly who can see this sensitive information.
Committed to information security
We recently achieved the Atlassian Security Certification – this was not without an immense amount of hard work by our developers and product owners. However, we never questioned the benefit of this, because we know information security is more important than ever before. Our commitment to you is to never lose sight of that importance.
Tempo was built with customer feedback, and we always want to hear more about your successes, challenges, and questions. Contact Tempo today if you’d like to share thoughts or hear more about what we’re planning next.
