Unleashing the Project Portfolio Management Potential of Custom Fields in Tempo Budgets for JIRA

Customization is crucial to be successful with any software solution and we know our customers need tools that can perfectly fit their financial project portfolio management needs. This is why we’ve recently upped our game when it comes to custom fields.

Since the release of Tempo Budgets 10.4 for JIRA, it’s possible to import custom fields from one folio to another. On top of that, we’ve also made it possible to filter reports according to those fields.

Let’s just quickly explore some of the ways you can use custom fields and how to use them.

What kinds of fields can I add in Tempo Budgets?

It’s possible to add custom fields to a folio in Tempo Budgets for:

  • Expenses
  • Revenue
  • Staff members & positions

Using custom fields allows you to add an extra layer, or multiple layers to the organization of your financial data. When you plan or book a cost or position, you are asked to categorize that item by type and you can also choose to associate it with a Tempo Account. Adding one or more custom fields gives you more options when you create those items.

It’s also possible to filter reports by your chosen custom fields. This allows you to better slice and dice your data and see exactly what you want to.

How to do it

To add custom fields to a folio, you need to go into the folio’s configuration. To do that, click the folio dropdown menu when you're in the folio you'd like to add fields to and choose “configure.”

From the configure page, choose “custom fields” in the sidebar on the left. Here you can add custom fields to expenses, revenue, or staff members and positions. You can also choose what kind of value can be put into that field.

To import custom fields from a previous folio, simply click the option to import custom fields and all of the fields used in previous folios will show up.

As mentioned above, as of Tempo Budgets 10.4 and improved in Tempo Budgets 10.5, you can also filter reports by custom fields. To do this, simply go into any report and choose the option to filter by that field on the right hand side.

As you can see above, I've added the custom field "Department" and I can now filter the report according to that parameter.

Exporting reports using custom fields to Excel allows you to quickly generate a spreadsheet with an extra row for those fields, saving you time and effort.

Go ahead and try it out and unlock your hidden Tempo Budgets potential by adding some custom fields.

Happy budgeting adventures!
